How to identify
- Pear-shaped soft insects in green, black, yellow, or gray
- Crowded on new growth and under leaves
- Sticky honeydew; ants may farm the colony
Damage: Distorted tips, yellowing, sooty mold on honeydew, and possible virus spread.
Control methods
- Blast undersides of leaves with water in the morning for several days.
- Pinch out the worst tips into a bag if the colony is small.
- Protect lady beetles and lacewings — pause sprays if predators are present.
- Avoid constant high-nitrogen feeding that makes soft, attractive growth.
